Poisoning found to be cause of death of seven elephants

Poisoning has been found to be the cause of death of seven elephants in Habarana recently.

A committee appointed by the Wildlife Department to investigate the cause of death of the seven elephants found that the animals had been poisoned.

The Army and Police were deployed to search the forest reserve in Hambarana on 28 September after five elephants were found dead.

During the search operation the carcasses of two more elephants were found.

The carcasses of the first four elephants were found near a tank bund in Hiriwadunna, Habarana and among them was a pregnant elephant.

Later a fifth elephant was found dead and a search had been launched in the area fearing more elephants may have been poisoned.

Subsequently two more dead elephants were found. (Colombo Gazette)
