Chamal, Welgama withdraw from Presidential race

Former Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Parliamentarian Kumara Welgama have withdrawn from the Presidential race.

Both Chamal Rajapaksa and Kumara Welgama had placed cash deposits to contest the election next month.

However both withdrew from the race today.

A cash deposit was placed at the Elections Commission on behalf of Chamal Rajapaksa last week to contest the Presidential election.

However the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) later said that his nomination was a back-up plan in the event Gotabaya Rajapaksa was prevented from contesting by court.
