Wimal confirms Chamal was a “backup plan”

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) member Wimal Weerawansa today admitted that former Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa was a “backup plan”.

A cash deposit was placed at the Elections Commission today on behalf of Chamal Rajapaksa to contest the Presidential election.

“There is no need to worry about that. That was a backup plan,” Weerawansa said after SLPP Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa won a case seeking to prevent him from contesting the 2019 Presidential election.

Chamal Rajapaksa was seeking to contest as an independent candidate if Gotabaya Rajapaksa was prevented from contesting by court.

The Sri Lanka Nidahas Podujana Peramuna placed the deposit at the Elections Commission today on behalf of Chamal Rajapaksa. (Colombo Gazette)

Specific areas made available for non-violent protests
