SLPP says will not accept UNP MPs with bad track record

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) says it will not accept United National Party (UNP) members who have a bad track record.

SLPP member Wimal Weerawansa said that some UNP members have expressed the interest to support SLPP Presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the Presidential election.

However, Weerawansa said that since there are debatable issues over some UNP MPs the SLPP will not continue talks with those MPs.

Weerawansa said that the SLPP will continue talks with UNP MPs with a clean record and look to obtain their support at the election.

The SLPP is also in talks with the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and other political parties.

The SLPP is preparing to stage its first major election rally on October 6 in Anuradhapura.

Police fire tear gas on joint opposition protest near Parliament

The Police fired tear gas on a joint opposition protest near Parliament today. The protest was staged by supporters of the joint opposition demanding the holding of the Local Government (LG) elections soon. The police were forced to close the road near Parliament as a result of the protest. However the police later used water cannons and?tear gas to disperse the protesters. (Colombo Gazette)

Court refuses to free former Minister Karuna Amman

The court today refused to free former Minister Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman who is in remand over the alleged?misuse of a Government vehicle. Karuna Amman had filed a bail application but it was rejected today by the Colombo Chief Magistrate.
