A demonstration was staged in Karaitivu, Ampara today against the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS).
The protest was against the actions of the BBS in Mullaitivu recently.
Similar protests had been staged in the North earlier in the week.
Civil society groups and others took part in the protest in Karaitivu condemning the BBS for violating a court order in Mullaitivu.
The demonstrators demanded that the rule of law be protected and the rights of minorities be respected.
A tense situation arose in Mullaitivu this week over the final rites of a monk.
The Mullaitivu Magistrate’s Court had ordered that the final rites of the Chief Incumbent of the Nayaru Rajamaha Vihara be carried out on the beach opposite the temple.
Tamil residents in the area had objected to the final rites being conducted in the temple premises as there is a Hindu Kovil in the same area.
However several people including the Bodu Bala Sena led by the Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero performed the final rites on the temple property.
