United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has agreed to nominate UNP Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa as the Presidential candidate of the United National Front, without preconditions.
Wickremesinghe met Premadasa and several other senior UNP members at Temple Trees today.
Among those who attended the meeting were MPs Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Rajitha Senaratne and Navin Dissanayake.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Dissanayake said that all issues were resolved and it was agreed to nominate Sajith Premadasa as the Presidential candidate of the United National Front.
Asked if there were any preconditions, Dissanayake said that there are no preconditions but some agreements which will be announced by the UNP Working Committee.
He said that following the discussions today Wickremesinghe had proposed to nominate Premadasa as the Presidential candidate and it was approved by the party.
The UNP Working Committee will meet this afternoon to ratify the nomination.
Speaking at a rally yesterday Premadasa had said that he is not prepared to sacrifice his self-respect for the sake of being nominated as the Presidential candidate.
He said that he will not be a puppet by agreeing to any preconditions. (Colombo Gazette)
