United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe says the public will take the final decision on the Executive Presidency.
Speaking in Mirigama today, the Prime Minister said that the Executive Presidency issue cannot be ignored.
Wickremesinghe said that he raised the matter yesterday at the cabinet meeting and there were differences of opinion.
He said that he is being questioned by several people on what stand is being taken with regards to the issue.
The Prime Minister said that the matter needs to be discussed in the open and each political party will need to decide on the stand it will take on abolishing the Executive Presidency.
In the end, he says, the public will decide the fate of the Executive Presidency.
He also said that Constitutional changes cannot be brought about without the support of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).
Wickremesinghe said that the Government does not have the numbers it needs in Parliament to make any amendments to the Constitution without the support of the SLPP. (Colombo Gazette)
