President insists most Sri Lankans support death penalty

President Maithripala Sirisena insists most Sri Lankans support implementing the death penalty. Speaking at a?ceremony held in Ratnapura today the President said that he wanted to implement the death penalty on some convicts to control the drug menace However, he said some politicians protested against it and the convicts are now celebrating. The President said that he is certain 90 percent of the population support implementing the death penalty.

US envoy writes to President dismissing concerns

CID Director goes to Police to complain against lawyer

The Director of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Shani Abeysekera, has lodged a complaint with the Police saying a lawyer had made threats against him. In his complaint, Abeysekera said that the President of the Lawyers? Collective, Attorney at Law Manoj Gamage had made threats against him at a media conference. Just last week Abeysekera had appeared before the Parliament Select Committee on the Easter Sunday attacks to make a statement after he was summoned before the Committee.
