SLPP refuses to change symbol for polls

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has refused to change the party symbol for the upcoming Presidential elections.

Opposition Parliamentarian Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said that the flower bud symbol of the SLPP is a sign of victory for the people.

Speaking to reporters today, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said that the SLPP is a party determined to protect all communities, be it Sinhalese, Tamils or Muslims.

“No matter what kind of pressure comes on us we will not change the symbol of the party,” he said.

There have been reports that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party had called for a change in the symbol of the SLPP to contest as an alliance at the next elections.

However both the SLPP and the SLFP had not reached a consensus on the issue over the symbol. (Colombo Gazette)
