At pro-Gota event Murali insists President must be a politician

Former Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan today noted that the next President of Sri Lankan must be an experienced politician.

Speaking at the Viyathmaga Annual Convention 2019, at the Shangri – La Hotel in Colombo today, Muralitharan said that cricketers and other professionals cannot lead the country.

Viyathmaga was launched by professionals who support former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Rajapaksa has been named as the Presidential candidate of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP).

Muralitharan said that some people in Sri Lanka place their faith in businessmen and others but a President can only be someone who has experience in politics to take political decisions.

The former cricketer urged the public to vote for a President who had already made a mark in Sri Lanka, who will protect the people and lead by example.

He said that a true leader must lead by setting an example and not lead just by words.

Muralitharan noted that some leaders say they will die for the country. He says there is no point if they die. What is required is for them to rule the country.

He also spoke about the war and the sacrifices made to end the war.

Muralitharan said that the LTTE had a choice when peace talks took place but instead they killed innocent people.

He said that the greatest day in his life was in 2009 when the war ended.

  1. Murrulitharan you are correct we need a experienced politician to be a our president in 2020 going further that person should be person who has been a at least a with some experience in provincial council level with integrity and character with no criminal records blood on his hand

  2. I have posted the following message on Gota’s page….

Dear Mr Rajapaksa, Murali said that he can’t be the president because the high position needs lots of knowledge and experience, he is just a cricketer. If that so, how can he qualify to advice people? I have lots of respect for Murali as a cricketer. He should follow Sanga and stay out of politics, if he clearly sees he doesn’t have the expertise, instead of delivering ambiguous speeches to confuse people.

One important thing Mr Rajapaksa, Sri Lankan young people will never have enough knowledge to think as me and they never taught to respect people like me. This is the reason you will always below Singapore and continue to daydream to become like Singapore. You are lowest in Asia, you fought the Asia’s longest brutal civil war and recently killed hundreds of foreigners. This kinds of terrorism never happened in other parts of Asia in the 21st century.

  3. It is very sad that we have to listen to this idiot. He may be an expert in cricket, not in politics. I still remember when Mahide Rajapaksa was campaigning first time for the presidency, his illiterate view of the tamil’s problem was only language. This illiterate became the president, and massacred so many. He behaved like he was the president of Sinhalese than all Srilankan. Now, we have a president who has no leadership skills behave like fanatic sinhalese than Srilankan. He would have been gentleman if he resigned after the court ordered that he acted against the constitution. He does not even know his constitution, but …O Lord.
