Most Government MPs absent in Parliament today

Most Government Parliamentarians were absent in Parliament today and the opposition alleged most of them were in Kurunegala to attend a rally in support of United National Party Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa.

The opposition raised concerns that even the Minister of Finance Mangala Samaraweera and Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade Malik Samarawickrama were not in Parliament today despite questions being raised related to their Ministries.

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Parliamentarian Bimal Rathnayake said that today was a black day for Parliament as 15 questions mentioned in the order paper were raised and there was not a single minister to answer any of the questions.

The quorum bell also had to be rung midway through the sittings today as there was hardly anyone in the House.

Some opposition Parliamentarians said that most UNP MPs had gone to Kurunegala to attend a rally in support of United National Party Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa instead of attending Parliament sessions.

Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella said that he agreed with the concerns raised and that all Ministers facing questions in Parliament must be present to respond.

Kiriella however said that he was prepared to respond to any question posed to the Government.
