Army chief says his role is to protect every Sri Lankan

Army commander, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva says his role is to protect every Sri Lankan and not just one ethnic community.

Silva said that he has been appointed as the Army Commander to protect each and every Sri Lankan.

He said that some countries have expressed their opinion about his appointment as Army Commander but he believes President Maithripala Sirisena had picked who he feels is best for the country.

The Army Commander was speaking at a media briefing in Colombo today held to announce the holding of the 9th consecutive ‘Colombo Defence Seminar – 2019’ which will be held at the BMICH on 29 – 30 August 2019.

Over 800 foreign and local participants, including 13 foreign and 14 local speakers, are expected to attend the Colombo seminar. So far representatives from 42 countries have confirmed their participation.

Top level military officers from Australia, Bangladesh, China, Canada, Maldives (Chief of Defence Force), Myanmar, Nepal, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Tanzania, UK, Vietnam and Zimbabwe are among the foreign military delegates who have confirmed their participation at the seminar.
