Archbishop calls for calm after tense situation in Katuwapitiya

Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith called for calm today after a tense situation arose in Katuwapitiya.

The tense situation arose after a stone had allegedly been thrown at a statue near the St. Sebastian’s Church in Katuwapitiya.

Angry protesters threatened to create chaos after the casing of the statue was seen damaged.

Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, who travelled to the area, sought a meeting with the protesters.

He urged them to remain calm as there was no evidence to blame anyone over the incident.

Mahela Jayawardena to head new Sports Council

A new Sports Council headed by former Sri Lanka cricket captain Mahela Jayawardena has been appointed. Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa appointed the council and had his first meeting with the members today. The Sports Council has been tasked to draft a new Sports Act and also approve all national teams in future.
