The Kurunegala Magistrate’s Court today granted bail to Dr. Mohamed Shafi over the case where he was accused of performing illegal sterilization surgeries and having links to terrorist activities.
Dr. Shafi was presented to the Kurunegala Magistrate’s Court today after being remanded by the court.
Dr. Shafi was released on four personal bails each adding up to Rs 2.5 million and a cash bail of Rs 250,000.
The CID had already informed court there is no evidence to back the allegations against the doctor.
After meeting the bail conditions, Dr. Shafi had walked out of court dressed as a lawyer so as to avoid being seen by protesters outside court.
Several people, including monks, were protesting outside court against granting bail to Dr. Shafi.
Dr. Mohamed Shafi was arrested and remanded over suspicions raised on the manner he had accumulated assets.
He was later investigated over allegations he performed illegal sterilizations on women preventing them from getting pregnant.
Deputy Solicitor General Thusith Mudalige informed court recently that a three-month detention order against Dr. Shafi was withdrawn after the Ministry of Defence was informed that the evidence against Dr. Shafi was inadequate to prove that he had received funds from a terrorist organisation to promote their activities.
