UNP delegation discuss death penalty with EU

A delegation from the United National Party (UNP) had talks with the European Union in Colombo today on the death penalty.

The Delegation of the European Union (EU) in Sri Lanka, issued a statement following the talks in agreement with the Embassies of France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Romania and the UK High Commission.

The statement said that the EU Heads of Mission (HoMs) received a visit by a group of United National Party parliamentarians today to discuss the death penalty.

During the meeting, the HoMs restated the strong and unequivocal opposition of the EU and its Member States to capital punishment in all circumstances and in all cases.

The HoMs reiterated their call to Sri Lanka to maintain its moratorium on the death penalty with a view towards complete abolition.

Cop who brought corpse of woman in bag commits suicide

A policeman who had brought the corpse of a woman in a bag to Colombo has committed suicide. The headless corpse has been identified as that of a 30-year-old woman from Kuruvita. Standard operational procedure on burials released

Two circulars have been issued by the Health Ministry with regard to COVID-19 remains, with one circular on autopsy practice and disposal of a corpse infected with COVID-19 and the other on the standard operational procedure (SOP) in transportation and burial of deaths infected with COVID-19. Young woman arrested for assaulting baby

A 24-year-old woman has been arrested on charges of assaulting a nine-month-old male toddler in Jaffna. Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana said the woman was arrested after investigations had been launched into video footage that was circulated on social media of her beating the child with a cane.
