Former Deraniyagala PS Chairman gets 24 year rigorous imprisonment

The former Chairman of the Deraniyagala Pradeshiya Sabha, Anil Champika Wijesinghe alias ?Atha Kota?, was today sentenced to 24 years rigorous imprisonment on bribery charges.

Wijesinghe, who was found guilty, was also ordered by the Colombo High Court to pay a fine of Rs 20,000, a penalty of Rs 400,000 and Rs 250,000 as compensation to the plaintiff.

He was found guilty of?demanding a bribe of Rs 500,000 to issue a street line certificate for a property belonging to a woman from Deraniyagala in 2001.

Four arrested over assault on cops in Batticaloa

Four suspects have been arrested over an assault on two policemen in Batticaloa. The two policemen were assaulted and a gun was also stolen in Batticaloa yesterday. The Police said that the two policemen were on traffic duty when they were assaulted and the gun of one policeman was stolen.
