Ten petitions filed at SC against implementing death penalty

Ten petitions were filed at the Supreme Court (SC) today against the implementation of the death penalty.

The petitions were filed by the Centre for Policy Alternatives, Professor C. Gunaratne, Dr K. Senaratne and the attorney of some death row inmates at the Welikada Prison.

President Maithripala Sirisena said he has ordered the execution of four drug offenders, claiming it would end increasing addiction problems in the country.
