Commission grills Education Minister over allegations

The Presidential Commission of Inquiry today questioned Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam over allegations he misappropriated state funds when printing school textbooks.

He was accused of instructing the authorities to print a statement from him and his photograph in school textbooks.

Former Commissioner General of Educational Publication I.M.K.B. Illangasinghe had earlier testified before the Presidential Commission regarding the allegations.

It was reported that Illangasinghe had told the commission that the Education Minister contacted him personally to instruct him on publishing a statement followed by the minister’s signature and photograph in all school textbooks.
