PM says will not support death penalty

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says he will not support implementing the death penalty.

The Prime Minister said that the United National Party, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and the Tamil National Alliance are against implementing the death penalty.

The Prime Minister expressed these views while speaking at an event today.

President Maithripala Sirisena has said that he has signed the order to implement the death penalty.

He told local media heads last week that four convicts will be executed over the next few days.

The statement by the President drew wide international concerns.

The Prime Minister said that he will discuss the issue with the cabinet, the Speaker and the President. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Sri Lanka won’t go anywhere, the best you can do is daydream to become like Singapore. The leadership hardly agrees on any decision. Useless government in the history of Sri Lanka. It will get worse. Eventually, Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalease will be backed and supplied arms by three different world powers.
