Committee to probe content in school books

The Education Ministry has appointed a special committee to look into the content in school textbooks.
The committee has been tasked with investigating if there is any content in school textbooks which could affect?reconciliation.
Giving evidence before the Parliament Select Committee on the Easter Sunday attacks, one witness had claimed that the Government text books since the 1980’s were contributing factors to the birth of extremist leaders.
He had pointed out that Islam textbooks published for Grades 9 and 10 since 1981 have listed out the punishments which must be imposed for committing six major offences.
