Cabinet meets after a lapse of one week

The Cabinet, which did not meet last week following a dispute with President Maithripala Sirisena over the Parliament Select Committee (PSC), met today.

President Maithripala Sirisena chaired the cabinet meeting as usual when it met today.

Several cabinet papers were passed and it was noted that cabinet will meet again next week.

Cabinet did not meet last week after the President had objected to the PSC summoning defence officers to be questioned in front of the media.

The President had said he will not chair the cabinet meeting until the decision to summon security officers is reversed. (Colombo Gazette)

Officials refuse to admit to community spread

Former TNA MP Thurairatnasingham dies after contracting Covid

Former Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian K. Thurairatnasingham died after contracting the coronavirus. He died while receiving treatment at the Kantale hospital. “We announce with deep regret the passing away of Mr. K. Thurairatnasingham, former Member of Parliament (TNA) due to COVID19 last night in Kantale Hospital,” TNA MP and spokesman M.A Sumanthiran said. Thurairetnasingam contested from the Trincomalee District at the 2001 parliamentary election but failed to get elected.

Brunei bars arrivals from Sri Lanka and three other countries

Brunei has banned arrivals from Sri Lanka and three other South Asian countries. Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have been added to the travel ban list following soaring COVID-19 cases across South Asia, The Scoop reported. All foreign nationals departing or transiting through the four countries will be barred from entering Brunei from May 17, the Brunei Prime Minister?s Office said in a statement on Monday. The Government has also extended the suspension of travel to and from India
