Moratuwa Mayor Saman Lal Fernando commenced a fast-unto-death opposite the council building today in protest over President Maithripala Sirisena’s proposed ban on carpentry shops.
President Maithripala Sirisena had said that carpentry shops and timber mills will be closed in five years in order to protect the environment.
However Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa urged the President not to ban carpentry workshops and chainsaws as thousands of people would lose their livelihoods and would have no place to buy even a coffin.
Moratuwa Mayor Saman Lal Fernando said that he will continue his fast until the President reverses his decision. (Colombo Gazette)
