Kandy was tense this morning as a mass rally was staged in the town in support of the Venerable Athuraliye Rathana Thero who is on a hunger strike.
Hundreds of people gathered in the town forcing most shops to close and bring public transport to a halt.
Several religious leaders and politicians also visited the monk and inquired into his health condition.
Among those who visited the monk was Colombo Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith.
The Venerable Athuraliye Rathana Thero began a hunger strike on Friday opposite the Sri Dalada Maligawa temple (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic) demanding the removal of Minister Rishad Bathiudeen and Governors M.L.A.M Hizbullah and Azath Salley.
Meanwhile, the Chief Prelates in Kandy have urged the President and Prime Minister to intervene and resolve the issue. (Colombo Gazette)
