Chief Prelates, Cardinal oppose deal which invites foreign troops

The Chief Prelates of the Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters and Archbishop of Colombo His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith have said they strongly oppose any deal which invites foreign troops to Sri Lanka.

In a joint statement the Chief Prelates and the Archbishop said they were against any agreement which would allow any foreign military to enter the country or establish a base in Sri Lanka.

The joint statement notes that the focus of the country must be to stop extremist organizations and not enter into any agreement with a foreign country which would harm the country.

Concerns have been raised over discussions Sri Lanka is having with the US on a military deal.

However, the US has insisted that it has no plans to establish a military base in Sri Lanka. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Religious leaders understand international politics better than Ranil who has more than 40 years of political experience. Ranil does not even understand Sri Lankan politics, we should not expect too much from him. So many talented people left Sri Lanka or assassinated, but Ranil has been carrying on without any interruption as the PM or opposition leader. This is truly unfortunate for Sri Lanka and Asia.
