Government accused of misusing emergency regulations

The Government was today accused of misusing emergency regulations enforced after the Easter Sunday attacks.

The Tamil National Alliance said that the emergency regulations are being used by the military to harass Tamils in the North.

TNA Parliamentarian Mavai Senathirajah told Parliament today that there needs to be control on the manner the emergency regulations are enforced.

He said that the Army has excessive powers under the emergency regulations and this is being misused in the North.

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Parliamentarian Vijitha Herath told Parliament today that the Government was using the emergency regulations to control student protests.

He also noted that despite the emergency regulations being enforced the Government failed to prevent violent mob attacks from taking place in parts of the country. (Colombo Gazette)
