Temporary ban on social media lifted

The Government has lifted the temporary ban on social media websites with immediate effect.

The Government restricted access to Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Viber and Twitter after violence broke out in parts of the country on Sunday targeting Muslims.

The violence escalated on Monday with property owned by Muslims being set on fire in Gampaha and parts of the North Western Province.

With the situation now under control and several suspects arrested the Government today lifted the ban on social media.

Annual Kataragama Esala Perahera without spectators

The annual Kataragama Esala Perahera will be held without spectators, officials said. Entry for pilgrims into the Kataragama sacred area will be limited from 21 July 21 to 04th August. The annual Kataragama Esala Perahera will commence on July 21 and conclude on August 04 with the festival of Diya Kepima at Menik Ganga. Restrictions have been imposed during the Kataragama Esala Perahera as a result of the coronavirus. Strict health guidelines will be imposed on pilgrims visiting the Temple.

Ranil warns COVID-19 second wave inevitable

United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe today warned that the coronavirus (COVID-19) second wave is inevitable.
