EU to promote accountability in Sri Lanka

The European Union (EU) says it will continue to promote reconciliation and accountability in Sri Lanka. Peter S?rensen, Head of the EU Delegation to the UN in Geneva made the announcement during the 30th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva today. S?rensen said the EU will actively participate in all discussions during the Council, putting an emphasis among other on the country situations and thematic issues. (Colombo Gazette)

Chinese national arrested with gem stones

A Chinese national was arrested in Wattala today with over 130 gem stones, the police media unit said. The police said that the Chinese man had several types of gem stones on his possession. According to the police, the Chinese national, aged 32, did not have a valid permit for the 133 gem stones found in his possession.

Australia PM Tony Abbott unseated by Turnbull

Australia is to have a new prime minister after Tony Abbott was ousted as leader of the Liberal Party by cabinet minister Malcolm Turnbull. In the hastily-arranged party leadership ballot, Mr Abbott, who had been plagued by poor opinion polls, received 44 votes to Mr Turnbull’s 54.
