Several arrested and remanded over violence targeting Muslims

Several people have been arrested and remanded over the violence yesterday during which Muslim owned property came under attack.
The Police said that 74 people arrested over the violence in Minuwangoda and the North Western Province and 33 were remanded.
Among those arrested were activist Namal Kumara, Mahason Balakaya leader Amith Weerasinghe and the National Organizer of the Nawa Sinhale, Dan Priyasad.
Mobs attacked at least one mosque and several shops in Minuwangoda during the violence yesterday.
A major pasta factory was among the properties destroyed by the mob.
The Police later imposed a curfew in the area as well as in the entire North Western Province.
The curfew was later imposed around the island but lifted this morning. The curfew in the North Western Province was however maintained until further notice.
Area residents in Minuwangoda said that mobs threw petrol bombs at the shops during the violence and damaged other property using stones and iron bars and sticks.
