An island-wide curfew has been declared as violence targeting Muslims spread to other parts of the country this evening.
The violence which affected the North Western Province spread to Gampaha this evening.
The Police, who initially declared a curfew in the North Western Province and Gampaha, later declared an island-wide curfew.
The Police said the island-wide curfew has been declared from 9pm tonight to 4am tomorrow.
However, the curfew in the North Western Province has been enforced until further notice.
Violence broke out in parts of Chilaw on Sunday, mainly instigated by a post on Facebook and then spread to parts of Kurunegala.
As the situation continued to spread to other places the Government decided to declare an overnight curfew around the island. (Colombo Gazette)
