Newspaper to be warned over gossip column

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya today told Parliament he will raise concerns with a leading private newspaper over a gossip column it publishes on on its front page.

Tamil National Alliance Parliamentarian M.A Sumanthiran raised a privilege issue in Parliament today over contents related to him which had appeared in the column.

Sumanthiran said it was alleged in the gossip column that he had been warned by opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa of a possible attack in Batticaloa on Easter Sunday.

He said that the newspaper had claimed he was told by Rajapaksa not to attend the Easter Sunday service at Zion church.

The Parliamentarian said that he was not alerted of an attack and had no plans to visit Batticaloa on Easter.

He urged the Speaker to raise his concerns with the newspaper.

Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella said that the gossip column had misreported in the past as well and needs to be dealt with.

Jayasuriya said that since the concerns being raised are serious he will take it up with the newspaper through his office.
