Probe on circumstances leading to bail to nine suspects

An investigation has been launched over the circumstances which led to bail being granted to nine suspects arrested over the Easter Sunday attacks.

The investigation is being conducted by the Police Special Investigations Unit (SPIU).

The nine suspects arrested from the Wellampitiya copper factory over the Easter Sunday attacks were granted bail this week.

In granting bail, the court said that the Wellampitiya Police had failed to mention the offences the suspects were alleged to have committed.

The copper factory was linked to two of the Easter Sunday suicide bombers.

Multi-storey building destroyed in Wattala fire

A multi-storey building in Wattala was destroyed in a major fire this morning. The fire raged across the building before the fire brigade arrived. The Police said that the building housed a clothing store. Several fire trucks were deployed to extinguish the blaze. The Colombo-Negombo road was congested during morning rush hour at the time of the fire.
