Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today agreed to a request from opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa to have further discussions on the proposed Counter Terrorism Act (CTA).
Rajapaksa told Parliament that there are strong objections to the CTA in its current form.
He urged the Prime Minister to establish a Parliament select committee to further discuss the proposals.
The Prime Minister said that the CTA has already been discussed with the opposition and he is willing to have further discussions to reach a consensus.
The CTA has been proposed to replace the current Prevention of Terrorism Act.
However concerns have been raised that the proposed CTA will be more harmful to democracy than the PTA.
