Government warns no one should be laid off

The Government has warned that no one should be laid off from their employment despite the crisis in the country. Head of the Presidential Task Force Basil Rajapaksa warned that no loss of employment should take place both in the state and private sectors while the country is moving forward, the President’s Office said. He said that the newly instituted Task Force has the capability of fulfilling its mandate with a new vision in order to achieve objectives set out by President Gotabaya Rajapak

Abhayapura reopened after being isolated

The isolation imposed on Abhayapura village in Lankapura, Polonnaruwa has been removed. Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva told the Colombo Gazette that the village was reopened today. Twelve villages, including Abhayapura village in Lankapura, Polonnaruwa were declared as isolation areas on 22 April after the detection of a COVID-19 patient in the Pumadiya village in Abhayapura. Forty -three persons from Abhayapura village were later transferred to quarantine centers.

Central Bank further reduces policy rates to support economic activity

The Monetary Board of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, at a special meeting held today (06 May 2020), reviewed the current monetary policy stance and decided to reduce the Standing Deposit Facility Rate (SDFR) and the Standing Lending Facility Rate (SLFR) of the Central Bank by 50 basis points to 5.50 per cent and 6.50 per cent, respectively, effective from the close of business on 06 May 2020.
