Sri Lanka accused of failing to implement security sector reforms

The Government has been accused of not meeting its pledge to curtail police abuses prior to the March 2017 session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. Human Rights Watch said security sector reform was one of 25 undertakings by Sri Lanka in the Human Rights Council resolution adopted by consensus in October 2015. Three Chinese Nationals arrested at BIA with cigarettes, liquor

Three Chinese Nationals were arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) today with cigarettes and liquor being smuggled into the country. The customs department said that a Chinese woman was arrested when she arrived in the country from Beijing with a large stock of?cigarettes. Two other Chinese Nationals were arrested later with?tobacco?and liquor being smuggled into the country. Further investigations are underway. (Colombo Gazette)

Soldiers arrested over Noyahr’s abduction interdicted

The five soldiers who were arrested over the abduction and assault on journalist Keith Noyahr, have been interdicted by the Army. Two soldiers were arrested yesterday and three, including an Army Major, on Saturday. Noyahr was abducted in May 2008 and?was severely assaulted before being set free.
