Chandrika briefs UN Secretary General on reconciliation efforts

Chairperson of Office for National Unity and Reconciliation (ONUR) Madam Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga met with the UN Secretary General Ant?nio Guterres in New York. During the meeting the Secretary General was briefed about the reconciliation efforts taken by the Government of Sri Lanka and the work carried out by ONUR, which he appreciated. Madam Kumaratunga just concluded her visit to USA and will return to Sri Lanka shortly. (Colombo Gazette)

Government defends ?beer-friendly? budget despite concerns

The?Government today defended the ?beer-friendly? budget despite concerns raised by some members in the Government and Buddhist monks. Cabinet co-spokesman Dayasiri Jayasekara said that the public have been misled on the pricing formula for beer presented through the budget. He said the Government is keen to discourage the consumption of hard liqueur. Fitch Ratings said this week that Sri Lanka’s beer industry will regain market share from hard liquor following the more favourable tax regime

Dassanayake ordered to be transferred to prison hospital

The Colombo Fort Magistrate today ordered that former Navy spokesman D K P Dassanayake be transferred to the prison hospital from the Welisara Navy hospital. Dassanayake has been in remand after being arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) over the disappearance of 11 youth. The youth had been reported missing between 2008 and 2009.
