Gota gets a heroes welcome as he returns from US

Former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa returned from the United States today and was greeted by opposition Parliamentarians and a large number of his supporters.

Rajapaksa was given a heroes welcome on his return with a special event held at the Katunayake airport to welcome him.

Two civil cases were filed in the US against Rajapaksa while he was in the US on a private visit.

Rajapaksa however denied the allegations against him saying the case was clearly part of an attempt to prevent him from contesting the next Presidential elections.

The former Defence Secretary said that he has filed the papers in the US to renounce his US citizenship.

Rajapaksa, a dual citizen, needs to renounce his US citizenship to be eligible to contest the election.

Two cases were filed against Rajapaksa in the US this week and notice was served on him after he was tracked down in Pasadena.

One case was filed on behalf of a Tamil torture survivor while the other was filed over the murder of journalist Lasantha Wickremetunga. (Colombo Gazette)
