Police fire tear gas on protesting students

The Police fired tear gas on protesting university students near the Parliament roundabout this evening.

The protest resulted in traffic in the area coming to a standstill.

The students walked from Rajagiriya to the Parliament roundabout and demanded that they meet the Education Minister.

The protest took place with Parliament sessions underway so the Police blocked the road leading to Parliament.

The students then pushed down the Police barricades forcing the Police to fire tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protest. (Colombo Gazette)
