Lanka makes biggest leap in Global Peace Index

The end of the civil war saw Sri Lanka make the biggest rise in the latest Global Peace Index (GPI) released in London today. Sri Lanka leaped nearly 30 places to be ranked at number 103 out of 158 countries?with a score of 2,145 on the index. The Asia Pacific region?s overall score improved by the largest extent from last year and included three of the top five risers. Gifted Lankan elephant dies

An elephant gifted to Pakistan by Sri Lanka has died after officials at an Islamabad Zoo drank the wine that was meant to be given to the animal, Pakistan media reports said. According to zookeeper Muhammad Bilal, who was sacked after the death of a female elephant ?Saheli? on May 1, liquor is given to elephants in order to tame them. Bus accident injures 16

A bus ran into a post along the Anuradhapura-Puttalam road this morning injuring 16 people, the police media unit said. The accident occurred when the driver of the bus with 19 pilgrims heading to Anuradhapura from Wellampitiya had fallen asleep. According to the police the pilgrims had sustained only minor injuries. The driver of the bus was arrested.
