The Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry has revived the Counter Terrorism Unit in the Ministry to coordinate more closely between the defence, law enforcement authorities, other relevant agencies and Sri Lankan missions abroad on counter terrorism and counter crime initiatives.
The Counter Terrorism Unit has been revived with a view heightening cooperation relating to Combating terrorism, other transnational crimes and the rise of violent extremism, the Foreign Ministry said.
The Counter Terrorism Unit will most importantly coordinated efforts to continue the proscription of the LTTE as a terrorist organization by foreign governments.
In this context, the Ministry has continued its dialogue with the European Union (EU) on counter–terrorism measures, including providing input towards the EU’s review of proscribed terrorist organizations. (Colombo Gazette)
