SLPP insists no rift in Rajapaksa family over Presidential candidate

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) today insisted that there was no rift in the family of Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa over the nomination of the Presidential candidate of the SLPP.

SLPP member and Joint Opposition Parliamentarian Dullas Alahapperuma told reporters today that there was no final decision on the SLPP’s nomination for President at the next elections.

He said that only the media had reported that former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa was the Presidential nominee of the SLPP.

However Alahapperuma insisted that a final decision had not been taken.

He also said that some members of the Government are giving the impression that there is a rift in the Rajapaksa family on who should be President.

Alahapperuma said that there was no such rift and that all the brothers were working together in the party. (Colombo Gazette)

Crew rescued from ship on fire off Colombo harbour

A 25 member crew has been rescued from a container ship which caught fire off the Colombo harbour on 21st May. A major operation was launched to extinguish the flames of the ship. The fire on the ship was contained but flames were seen again today (Tuesday). Man seen leaving supermarket with goods in wheelbarrow arrested

A man seen leaving a supermarket with goods in a wheelbarrow has been arrested for violating the quarantine laws. The Police said the 40-year old man is a resident of Aluthgama. A video circulated on social media today of the man pushing a wheelbarrow with goods in it after shopping.
