Sri Lanka to boost ties with Canadian provinces

Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in Canada, M.A.K. Girihagama, handed over the Commission of Appointment issued by the Government of Sri Lanka and the Exequatur granted by Canada to three Honorary Consuls for Sri Lanka who were appointed in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick at a ceremony held at the High Commission premises.

The Honorary Consuls who received their documents were Phil Roberts for Calgary, Alberta, Malcolm A.C. Pinto for Halifax, Nova Scotia and Dr. Sameera Jayasena for St. John, New Brunswick.

Addressing the newly appointed Honorary Consuls, High Commissioner Girihagama stated that the role of the Honorary Consul was an important and noble one as they would promote Sri Lanka in their respective provinces and also guide Sri Lanka nationals and prospective visitors to Sri Lanka on consular matters.

The High Commissioner also emphasised the importance of enhancing further cooperation and exchanges between the provinces and Sri Lanka, and called for new areas of interactions.

The Honorary Consuls appointed were selected following a rigorous process in keeping with the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sri Lanka.

In addition to the newly appointed Honorary Consuls, Sri Lanka also has an Honorary Consul in Vancouver, British Columbia. (Colombo Gazette)
