Government goes ahead with Online Safety Bill

The Government went ahead with the Online Safety Bill despite concerns raised by the international community and local media and rights groups. Parliament decided to debate the Bill after a vote was taken on the matter. Public Security Minister Tiran Alles defended the Bill presented by him to Parliament, saying it is required in order to curb online harassment and misinformation. He says there has been a large number of complaints related to incidents of abuse and harassment on social media.

Politician among 5 killed in shooting

Politician Saman Perera, the leader of the Ape Jana Bala Pakshaya (Our Power of People Party), was among 5 people shot dead in Beliatta. Five people who were travelling in a jeep were shot dead in Beliatta, in southern Sri Lanka Monday, the Police said. According to reports, four people died at the scene of the crime and another person died on admission to hospital. The assailants had reportedly arrived in a vehicle and opened fire targeting the Defender jeep in which the victims were traveli

Protest near Parliament against Online Safety Bill

A protest was staged near Parliament today against Sri Lanka’s Online Safety Bill. Activists and others held placards and protested against the Bill. The Police also obtained a court order against any attempt to disrupt movements to and from Parliament. A heavy Police presence was seen at Parliament Road during the peaceful protest.
