More talks held in attempt to settle estate wage issue

More discussions were held today in an?attempt to settle the estate wage issue.

The discussion took place between the Minister of Plantation Industries?Navin Dissanayake and a group of Ministers representing the plantation communities.

Ministers Mano Ganesan, Palani Digambaram and Velusami Radhakrishnan were among those who attended the meeting.

Ganesan, Digambaram and Radhakrishnan are demanding Rs. 1000 as the daily basic wage for plantation workers.

Plantation trade unions recently signed a collective agreement with plantation companies agreeing to Rs. 700 as the daily wage.

In addition, the price share supplement which is given to employees from the earnings of the company by selling tea, was also agreed to be increased from Rs 30 to Rs 50.

However?Ganesan, Digambaram and Radhakrishnan and several trade unions have refused to back the agreement. (Colombo Gazette)

Catholic Church seeks to resume Sunday services

The Archbishop of Colombo, His Eminence Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith today called on the Government to allow church services to resume. The head of the Catholic Church in Colombo requested that Sunday church services resume under certain conditions. Church services have been suspended following the spread of the coronavirus. Central Bank chief insists banking system strong despite temporary setback
