Government tells plantation companies to agree to Rs. 1000

The?Government has told plantation companies today to agree to the Rs. 1000 daily wage hike demanded by plantation workers.

Minister of Plantation Industries Navin Dissanayake and Labor Trade Union Relations and Social Empowerment Minister Daya Gamage had separate talks with plantation companies and trade unions today on the demand for a wage hike.

The discussion took place at the Labour Department in Colombo.

The trade union are demanding Rs. 1000 as a daily wage but?plantation companies have refused to agree.

At the meeting with plantation companies they proposed Rs. 940 as a daily wage but?the Ministers said that?Rs. 1000 is a possibility.

The plantation companies have said they will have talks among themselves are look to reach a collective agreement.

Later, the Ministers briefed the plantation trade unions on the progress of the talks with the plantation companies.

Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) leader Arumugam Thondaman and State Minister of Plantation Industries, Vadivel Suresh attended the discussion. (Colombo Gazette)
