Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has declared that former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is the Leader of the Opposition.
The Speaker’s decision was announced by Deputy Speaker Ananda Kumarasiri when Parliament met today.
It was noted that Rajapaksa has been picked as Leader of the Opposition as he was nominated by the UPFA which has the largest number of seats in the opposition in Parliament.
The Speaker has noted that the issue raised over Rajapaksa’s membership in the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) is not a matter for the Speaker’s Office.
The Tamil National Alliance had earlier questioned if Rajapaksa can continue as a member of Parliament as he had accepted membership in the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) despite being elected to Parliament as a UPFA member.
However the Speaker noted that the UPFA has informed him that Rajapaksa is still a member of the UPFA.
