UNP tells Parliament it will support slashing President’s powers

The United National Party (UNP) told Parliament today that it will support moves to slash the powers of the President.

UNP and United National Front Parliamentarian Malik Samarawickrema told Parliament today that the recent events showed why the Executive Presidency must be abolished.

He said that the unity Government appointed in 2015 had pledged to abolish the Executive Presidency however that never happened.

However he said now it is more clear that the Executive Presidency must be abolished.

He called on Parliament to support the motion presented by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna to abolish the Executive Presidency. (Colombo Gazette)
