Motion seeking five judge bench in MR case rejected

A motion filed before the?Supreme Court yesterday requesting the appointment of a five-judge bench to hear the?appeal filed against a court order restraining Mahinda Rajapaksa from holding office of Prime Minister and his Cabinet from functioning was rejected today.

Lawyers appearing on behalf of United National Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had filed the motion at the Supreme Court.

However the?Supreme Court rejected the motion and instead decided to hear the appeal with a three judge bench.

The Court of Appeal had issued the restraining order on Mahinda Rajapaksa from holding office of Prime Minister and his Cabinet from functioning.

An appeal was later filed in the?Supreme Court against the?Court of Appeal order and the?Supreme Court took the case today. (Colombo Gazette)
