JVP to push for 20-A and then dissolve Parliament

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) says it will push for the 20th Amendment to the Constitution to abolish the executive powers of the President and then dissolve Parliament.

Speaking outside the Supreme Court this evening, JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that the Supreme Court ruling today proved without a doubt that the actions of President Maithripala Sirisena since October 26th were illegal.

He said that the President had abused his powers and so his executive powers must be abolished through the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.

Dissanayake also said that the current Parliament cannot be fully accepted as some Parliamentarians had crossed sides after accepting bribes.

As a result, he said that once the 20th Amendment to the Constitution is passed the next step will be to submit a motion to dissolve Parliament and hold early elections.

The Supreme Court today ruled that the President cannot dissolve Parliament till Parliament completes its full 4 1/2 year term.

The court also noted that if the President wants to dissolve Parliament early he must have 2/3rd majority support for the move in Parliament. (Colombo Gazette)

  1. Will the 20 th Amendment will include a clause to deprive the position of MP if an MP crosses over to the otherside. This is one of the main expectation of citizens. Crossing over culture should be immediately banned.
