Chief of Defence Staff Ravindra?Wijegunaratne remanded

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Ravindra?Wijegunaratne was today ordered to be remanded till December 5th by the Fort Magistrate.

He was remanded after statements were recorded in court today over Wijegunaratne’s links to the main suspect accused of being involved in the abduction of 11 youth between 2008-2009.

Wijegunaratne appeared in court today over allegations of assisting former Lieutenant Commander Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi of the Sri Lanka Navy to evade court.

Hettiarachchi is the main accused in the abduction and forced disappearance of the 11 youth.

The Criminal Investigations Department. which was investigating the abduction of the 11 youth, found that?Wijegunaratne gave money to?Hettiarachchi to flee the country.

Hettiarachchi, a former navy intelligence officer, was however arrested on August 13.

The Fort Magistrate later ordered the CID to record a statement from?Wijegunaratne over the allegations against him.

However?Wijegunaratne had failed to appear before the CID despite being issued notice.

He surrendered to the Fort Magistrate on Wednesday and after being questioned for several hours, he was ordered to be remanded.?(Colombo Gazette)
