United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarian Vasantha Senanayake returned to the UNP today saying he had resigned from his cabinet post but was sorry if his decision hurt President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Senanayake told reporters after attending the United National Front (UNF) Group meeting today that he decided to stick with the UNP to safeguard democracy.
He said that he had no personal grudge with the President or Rajapaksa.
“Whichever way I go I will be hurting someone,” he said.
Senanayake said that he accepted a cabinet post purely to work for the people in his electorate.
However, he said for the sake of democracy he decided to stick with the UNP.
He apologised to his supporters if his actions had hurt anyone but he refused to say sorry to any MP.
Last week the UNP termed Senanayake as a “triple jumping disgrace” after he rejoined the cabinet of President Maithripala Sirisena.
UNP MP Dr. Harsha de Silva said that the UNP will not take back Senanayake if he attempts to return once again.
Today Dr. Harsha de Silva tweeted an image of Senanayake at the UNP Group meeting and said “no comment”. (Colombo Gazette)
